New video shows driver's shootout with police after New Orleans attack

Watch: New bodycam video shows New Orleans attacker shoot at police

New Orleans Police on Friday released body-camera footage, showing the moment they exchanged gunfire with the man behind the New Year's Day attack.

The video captures Shamsud-Din Jabbar after he had crashed his white pick-up truck and started to fire at police.

Police returned fire and Jabbar was declared dead at the scene.

The New Year's Day attack left 14 people dead and dozens wounded after Jabbar drove the vehicle into a crowd on a busy block of Bourbon Street.

The incident occurred around 3:15 a.m. local time.

Video from New Orleans Police Department officer Luis Robles' body camera shows Jabbar exchanging gunfire with police.

In the 12-second clip, Mr Robles runs toward the vehicle while other officers approach Jabbar on the driver's side of the crashed truck.

There is one police officer on each side of the open door as Mr Robles gets closer. Police yell "get your hands up" to Jabbar with weapons drawn before a small flash - indicating Jabbar firing at officers - is seen near the deployed airbag inside the vehicle.

Then, multiple gunshots are heard as officers run from the truck, some diving for the ground. They are heard returning fire.

Three officers fired back, according to a release from the New Orleans Police Department. Officer Robles - whose body cam captured the footage - did not fire at Jabbar.

The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene. Two officers were injured in the shooting.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) said Jabbar acted alone in a "premeditated and evil act".

An Islamic State (IS) group flag was found inside the vehicle he was driving, according to the FBI.
