A man who has spent the past 15 years living on a boat says he "likes the freedom" of not being tied to the land.

Joel Sanders says he first bought a canal boat because he was "a bit bored" having spent time as a stand-up comedian in America.

He is bringing his touring show, Angry Boater, to Brighton later this month, detailing his life on the waterways.

He told BBC Radio Sussex: "I just like the freedom of it and it suits my lifestyle."

He added: "It's not for everybody but I've figured it out."

Mr Sanders said he swapped comedy shows across the US, including time in Las Vegas, for living on the UK's canal network as a spontaneous decision.

Since then, he said he would often schedule shows by mooring wherever he was in the country and performing pop-up gigs.

He has more recently appeared on Channel 4 show Narrow Escapes, appearing in its second series on Wednesday.

His appearance includes taking his canal boat out into the sea, which he describes as "incredibly calm".

Mr Sanders begins his Angry Boater tour in Brighton's Komedia on 17 June and will also perform at the Astor Theatre in Deal, Kent on 23 October.
