Man shot by armed police in Surrey
A man has been shot by armed police in a Surrey village.
Officers were called to Nursery Road, in Knaphill, at 00:35 BST, following reports of an altercation between two people, including a man armed with a weapon in the street.
A man, aged in his 20s, was shot by armed police at the scene, Surrey Police said.
He was taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition. His family has been informed.
An independent investigation has been launched into the incident, the force confirmed.
It said both parties involved were known to each other and that there was no anticipated risk to the wider public, adding that a weapon had been recovered.
Police appealed for witnesses and anyone with relevant CCTV footage to contact the force.
The force said it has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Surrey Police Federation said it would be "supporting the officers concerned during this challenging and difficult time".
A statement added: "The thoughts of everyone at Surrey Police Federation remain with the officers, the member of the public involved and their family."
