A school which had to be evacuated during Storm Éowyn on Friday will remain closed at the start of the new week.

Students and staff at Egglescliffe School, in Eaglescliffe, Teesside, were told to leave the building after high winds brought down scaffolding.

A message sent to parents at the time - and seen by the BBC - confirmed everyone was safe.

The school said it had made the "difficult decision" to remain closed on Monday and Tuesday.

'Safety'

"Structural engineers have assessed the site, and we have made the difficult decision to close the school to students and the majority of staff on Monday 27th January and Tuesday 28th January," it said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

"We appreciate this may be inconvenient to our families and students; however, the safety of our students and staff remains our priority."

Cleveland Fire Brigade was called to the school at about 11:45 BST on Friday.

Crews were at the scene on protective standby, and police also attended to assist with a road closure.

Storm Éowyn swept across parts of the UK, bringing 96mph (154 km/h) gusts of winds to some places.

Flights at Teesside Airport were disrupted and several roads had to close, including a section of the A689 near Wynyard, where an HGV overturned.
