Landfill site appeals against closure notice

A stinking landfill site has launched an appeal against a closure notice from the Environment Agency (EA).

The notice against Walleys Quarry in Silverdale, Staffordshire, was issued on 28 November, after years of residents' protests and several court battles.

The EA said the management of the site was poor and that further operation may result in significant long-term pollution.

The appeal will now be determined by an inspector appointed by the Planning Inspectorate (PINS).

A spokesperson for Walleys Quarry confirmed: "We have challenged the decision to issue a closure notice for the landfill site and are clear that keeping the site open delivers greatest benefit and sustainability for the site."

"Walleys Quarry have made extensive factual and legal submissions to the Environment Agency which in our view they have not substantively engaged with."

"As a business we completely reject the accusations made by the Environment Agency relating to poor management of the landfill site and will progress this appeal with the Planning Inspectorate."

As a result of the appeal being submitted, the EA has cancelled a public meeting to answer questions about the notice, which was due to be held on Monday at 19:00 GMT.
