A man has been charged with the murder of a mother-of-three described by her family as a "bright, smiling soul".

The body of Samantha Murphy, 32, was found by police after they were called to a house in Wadham Road in Portsmouth shortly before 08:00 BST last Thursday.

Charlie Jeans, 30, of Margate Road, Southsea, was charged with Ms Murphy's murder. He was remanded in custody at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court on Tuesday ahead of an appearance at the city's crown court on Thursday.

A 41-year-old Portsmouth man who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released on conditional bail until 9 September.

In a statement, Ms Murphy's family described her as a "devoted mother" to her three children and said she "radiated joy to everyone she met".

"She was strong-willed and determined, yet her kindness shone through, always quick to see the good in everyone," they added.

Her family said her death had "left an immense void".

"For her mother, it's not just the loss of a daughter, but of a best friend and constant companion.

"Her brother and sisters, whose bond with Sam was so rare and special, are utterly devastated by this unimaginable absence.

"We take comfort in knowing Sam would want her family and friends to pull together, ensuring her children are always protected and surrounded with the love she so generously gave," the statement added.

Two 32-year-old men, from Havant and Petersfield, previously arrested on suspicion of murder, were released on conditional bail on Monday until 5 September.
