Tonbridge Castle has been closed as the roof is repaired.
The current roof was added to the gatehouse in 2003 and Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council says it is showing signs of wear and tear.
The old zinc roof covering will be removed as timber and stonework repairs are carried out, before a new roof covering is installed.
The 900-year-old castle is managed by the council, which used £400,000 from its budget to fund the renovations.
Upgrades will also be carried out to improve the lighting system inside the Great Hall.
The council's cabinet member for community services, Des Keers, said: "This restoration project is not just about preserving a historical structure, it is about safeguarding a vital part of our local heritage and ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy and learn from it.
"The castle is a popular visitor attraction and hosts many events, from community fetes and music concerts to educational visits and weddings."
The grounds and gift shop will remain open for the duration of the works.
The council says the castle is due to re-open in early May.
