A cannabis farm worth an estimated street value of £170,000 has been dismantled following a raid on a house in Sheffield, police have said.

The plants, which were seized after officers entered the property on Maltravers Road on Thursday, would be destroyed, according to South Yorkshire Police.

The raid took place following intelligence received and inquiries were continuing to locate suspects in connection with the discovery of the plants, a force spokesperson said.

Insp Katie Hammond, from South Yorkshire Police, said: "We'll continue to work to dismantle cannabis farms and bring those who think they're above the law to justice."

Insp Hammond said it was a "misconception" that cannabis farms posed a low risk to communities.

"Homes housing cannabis farms carry a serious fire risk, as the electricity is often bypassed in an attempt to hide what is really going on," she said.

"We also know cultivations like the one we have found help to fund the illegal and extremely harmful activities of organised crime groups."

Anyone with information about the cannabis farm found on Thursday should get in touch, South Yorkshire Police said.
