Landslip road to remain closed another week

A road cut off by a landslip will remain closed for a second week, a council has said.

Cobb Road in Lyme Regis was closed as a precaution on Monday 25 November after a bank collapsed alongside the steep road leading to the seafront.

Dorset Council has now issued a formal emergency road closure notice, saying it will likely remain closed until Friday.

Temporary access has been made available to properties and businesses at the bottom of the hill.

Dorset Council said it was continuing to work with the landowner and their contractors.

It said: "We have spoken to local residents and businesses regarding alternative access while Cobb Road is closed.

"If visitors in cars cannot delay their journey until Cobb Road is reopened, they are advised to park - safely and legally - close to where they wish to go before proceeding on available footpaths, such as Marine Parade."

The geology of Lyme Regis and the surrounding area makes it prone to erosion.

Millions has been spent shoring up the town, including a £20m scheme to build a new seawall and stabilise cliffs in the eastern side, which was completed in 2015.

Cobb Road is the only public road leading to The Cobb end of the town's beach, which is home to a number of residents and businesses.
