Islanders urged to focus on sexual health

Healthcare workers are encouraging people in Guernsey to look after their mental wellbeing to help their sexual health.

This week is Sexual Health Week and the team at the sexual health clinic at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital, the Orchard Centre, is encouraging islanders to sign up for check-ups and tests.

The centre offers free screening and advice to islanders, who can book an appointment without a referral from their doctor.

During the dedicated week, staff are urging people to read about sexual health, take part in open conversations about the subject and ask for advice or an appointment.

Dr Nicola Brink, director of Public Health, said: "Physical and mental health, together with emotional wellbeing, are so closely interlinked. This year we want to highlight the close links between mental health and sexual health.

"We would like to encourage all islanders to take care of their mental health and wellbeing which can also support healthy decision-making when it comes to sexual health and wellbeing."

Nurse Laura Brouard, the Orchard Centre manager, emphasised the importance of regular sexual health check-ups, testing for HIV and sexually transmitted infections, and raising awareness about issues related to healthy relationships.
