Rare free green waste service to resume

An increasingly rare free green waste service resumes in Walsall on Monday.

Despite costing Walsall Council £1.15m in 2024/25 Kerry Murphy, the councillor responsible for "street pride", says: "We are proud to provide this free service for our residents."

Of Walsall's neighbours, Cannock Chase District Council charges the least for green waste collection, charging an annual fee of £38.50.

But Birmingham takes the crown in the region with the city council charging residents £61.80 - although the service is currently suspended because of the ongoing all-out bin strike.

The councils in Wolverhampton and Sandwell both charge residents £40 a year.

Shropshire Council recently started charging £56 a year, but Telford and Wrekin Council does not charge its residents.

The garden waste collection service cost Walsall Council £1.15m in 2024.

In Walsall, flowers, plants, grass cuttings, hedge and tree clippings, leaves and weeds can go in the brown bin.

The free collections across the borough will take place fortnightly, up until the week commencing 20 October.
