An investigation is under way after a large section of scaffolding fell from a public library on to the road below.

A man was pulled from his van by members of the public, after becoming trapped during the incident on Church Street, Stoke Newington, London Fire Brigade (LFB) said. However, no injuries have been reported.

Emergency services were called at about 07:45 BST and remain at the scene, along with Hackney Council workers.

Some local residents were evacuated as a precaution and a cordon remains in place.

Church Street was closed in both directions to traffic and pedestrians near the junction with Albion Road, with local buses being diverted.

Hackney Council said it was working with the emergency services to clear the road of debris and remove the damaged van.

New scaffolding will need to be erected before the road can be reopened, the local authority said.

A Hackney Council spokesperson said: "The scaffolding was in place in advance of work to renovate the library, which includes repairs to the roof of the Grade II-listed building.

"Council teams are working hard with emergency services to clear the road, make the area safe and reopen the street as soon as possible.

"We advise people to avoid the area until further notice and a full investigation will follow into the circumstances which led to the collapse."
