A woman in her 80s has died after her car veered off a rural road and landed in a ditch, police have said.

Lancashire Police said it received a call about a road traffic collision on Meadow Lane in Lathom, near Ormskirk, at about 15:35 GMT on 27 March.

Officers found a Suzuki Splash lying in a ditch.

The seriously injured driver was taken to hospital where she later died.

Sgt Anthony Beckett, of Lancashire Police's roads policing team, said: "My thoughts first and foremost are with the driver's loved ones at this extremely difficult time.

"They are being supported by specially trained officers.

"This collision happened in a rural location, and we are trying to find out why the car left the carriageway, and when it happened.

"If you witnessed what happened or have dashcam footage from the area, we ask you to contact police."
