Services yet to find cause of stadium fire

The cause of a major fire at a speedway and motorsport stadium a week ago has still not been established.

Firefighters were called to Mildenhall Stadium at West Row, Suffolk at 17:30 BST on 30 July to reports of a fire inside a storage unit.

Eighteen appliances from three counties tackled the fire overnight before it was brought under control.

However, the fire service said because of the extent of the damage, it had proved difficult to find the cause.

A spokesperson for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it was not treating the incident as suspicious.

All further fixtures at the stadium have been postponed for the foreseeable future, according to promoter Spedeworth Motorsports.

It said in a statement some fixtures could possibly be moved elsewhere but "no immediate announcements" would be made.

Crews from Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire were called to the fire and a water carrier from the nearby US air base at RAF Mildenhall was used.

Former owner turned-caretaker Dave Coventry previously said parts of the stadium had been "devastated".

The stadium has been in operation since the 1970s and is home to the Mildenhall Fen Tigers speedway team as well as hosting stock car and greyhound racing.
