The council said it was working with the police while they investigate the accident at the site in Reading last week

A council has said it is working with police and the Health and Safety Executive to investigate the death of a man after a building site fall.

Contractors hired by Reading Borough Council are currently conducting works to build a respite care facility and 17 affordable homes in Amethyst Lane, Southcote, Berkshire.

On 19 February, a 36-year-old man fell through the floor of a trench at the site, and died of his injuries four days later.

A spokesperson for the council said: "The council and the onsite contractor are working with Thames Valley Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) while they investigate this tragic incident."

The spokesperson added: "Our thoughts and condolences are with the family of the man who has died."

The site was previously used as a family support centre and an office for the council's protection and planning department.

It was deemed surplus to requirement as council offices, and was last seen open in 2016.

The man who died has not been named.
