Dangerous driver jailed for trio's crash injuries

A man has been jailed following a serious crash in Shropshire in which three people suffered life-changing injuries.

Djay Marques, 26, of Carisbrooke Road, Wednesbury, West Midlands, crashed with another vehicle while driving on Parkway in Woodside, Telford, in November 2023.

He was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison at Shrewsbury Crown Court on 29 November after pleading guilty to three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, as well as driving while disqualified, handling stolen goods and dangerous driving.

Marques was also given a driving ban for three years and nine months.

The crash caused extensive damage to the other vehicle, and the three occupants had to be cut free by the fire service, West Mercia Police said.

Despite fleeing the scene, police said the impact of the crash caused Marques' mobile phone to automatically contact 999, placing him at the scene.

Following a manhunt, Marques handed himself in to police in June 2024.

"Marques' actions that night not only left three people with life-changing injuries, but also delayed us getting any form of justice for them after he fled the scene," said PC Ben Ward, from the force.

"I am grateful to the judge for the sentence he has handed to Marques, and I hope it is able to bring some sort of closure to his victims, who have already suffered enough."
