Charity reports theft of £1,000 worth of equipment

A charity in Kent says about £1,000 worth of audio equipment has been stolen ahead of two fundraising events.

Demelza said staff noticed the equipment had been taken on Saturday morning ahead of its Easter trail and craft fair at its site in Rook Lane in Sittingbourne across the weekend.

A sound system and electrical equipment were allegedly taken from a large secured marquee, which had been set up in the grounds of the charity's new Hill Farm site.

Laura Smyth, Demelza's deputy director of fundraising, said the charity was "absolutely appalled".

The care charity said the equipment had been funded by a regular Demelza supporter, who was also devastated.

"To steal from anyone is awful, but to steal from a charity which is clearly preparing to host a fun family event is just unthinkable," Ms Smyth added.

"It's a blow to all of our wonderful supporters who are so generous in the different ways they help Demelza."

The charity said the events would still go ahead.
