A railway station has been closed and a woman has been taken to hospital after reports of a serious assault, emergency services said.

British Transport Police said officers were called to Bescot Stadium station in Wednesbury just after 23:25 BST on Sunday.

The force said an 18-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remained in police custody.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said its teams had treated a woman in a serious condition at the scene and she was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

British Transport Police said the station would be closed and there would be an increased police presence in the area.

West Midlands Police said it was assisting with inquiries.
