A section of the A303 will be closed overnight as a major upgrade to the road moves forward.

The stretch between Sparkford and the Podimore Roundabout in Somerset will be shut from 21:00 BST on 28 September to 06:00 BST on 29 September.

When the road reopens there will be one lane open in each direction with a 50 mph speed limit to allow contractors to complete work safely on the other lanes and the central reservation.

Motorists are being advised to take care and follow signs until they become familiar with the new layout.

The upgrade will provide a high-quality dual carriageway link, including new and replacement slip roads, junctions and road bridges

The two-year project, due to be completed next year, is an upgrade to a three-mile section of the A303 between Sparkford and Ilchester.

It is part of a long-term aim to create a safer and more reliable dual carriageway link between London and the South West to ease congestion.

Elsewhere on the scheme, National Highways said it was finishing the roundabout on the southside of the Steart Hill overbridge.

In order to complete the work, the bridge which passes over the A303 will remain closed until 2 October.
