Opening of city's Dutch-style roundabout delayed

The opening of a new Dutch-style style roundabout in Sheffield has been delayed.

Originally earmarked to open in mid-October, Sheffield City Council said the roundabout at West Bar will not open till mid-November.

The new road layout is designed to give priority to pedestrians and cyclists over motor vehicles, though some in the city have raised concerns it may be confusing.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said similar roundabouts in the Netherlands had reduced serious incidents by about 46%.

The new layout includes zebra crossings at each arm of the roundabout, giving pedestrians priority over vehicles.

There will also be a dedicated cycle track around the roundabout, with vehicles required to give way to cyclists at all arms of the roundabout.

Work on the scheme began in April 2023 and Sheffield City Council said public information events would be held prior to the roundabout opening.
