National Highways say there has been a significant fuel spillage from the tanker

A major route has been closed after a tanker overturned, spilling a "significant" quantity of fuel.

The vehicle came off the A66 near Threlkeld in Cumbria, between the A591 at Keswick and the A5091 (Troutbeck) shortly after 05:00 GMT.

National Highways said the road is likely to remain closed for the rest of the day.

Diversions are in place but journeys are likely to take much longer than normal, it added.
