Police are continuing to investigate a report of criminal damage to Plymouth's Holocaust Memorial.

An attempt was made to remove the Holocaust Memorial Plaque situated within the Garden of Peace on Plymouth Hoe, police said.

Devon and Cornwall Police said damage was caused to the stone and plinth between 21:00 GMT on Wednesday 29 January and 10:00 GMT on Thursday 30 January.

Police said the incident was being treated as a hate crime and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

'Great distress'

The damage occurred in the days after Holocaust Memorial Day which takes place on 27 January.

PC Stacey Vidler said: "While a crime like this is rare, it has understandably caused great distress to members of the Jewish Community.

"If anyone has any information or saw anyone acting suspiciously around the memorial, we encourage you to come forward and to contact us."
