A two-year-old girl found with "very serious injuries" in a Surrey flat is in a stable condition in hospital, police have said.

The child was one of two people found badly hurt after police were called to a property on Woodthorpe Road, in Ashford, at 13:15 GMT on Thursday.

A woman in her 20s was later pronounced dead at the scene.

A man in his 30s arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder remains in custody while inquiries continue, Surrey Police said.

Councillor Joanne Sexton, leader of Spelthorne Borough Council, said she recognised it was "a very worrying time" for residents but assured them there was no wider risk to the community.

She urged anyone with information to get in touch with the police.

She added: "As a matter of course, the council will be holding a meeting to review this incident and offer our ongoing support to the wider community.

"My thoughts are with everyone affected during this sad time."
