Officers investigated after woman's death in crash
Two police officers are being investigated after an elderly woman died following a crash involving an unmarked police car.
The 84-year-old was driving a Nissan Micra on Park Hall Road, Stoke-on-Trent, when she was crashed with the force's Skoda Octavia on 5 December.
The woman was taken to hospital and discharged but was later readmitted and died on Christmas Day.
The initial incident was referred by Staffordshire Police to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and referred again to them after her death.
The IOPC said it was investigating the actions of the officers involved and police bodyworn camera footage of the incident as well as police radio transmissions, policy documents and training records.
Their director, Derrick Campbell, said: "Following this tragic development we have now decided to independently investigate the circumstances, including the actions and decisions of two police constables before the collision.
"Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who died and we are making contact with them to explain our role and how our investigation will be conducted."
The woman's family were being kept regularly updated on progress, he added.
