Just under 200 jobs axed at JD Sports warehouse

Just under 200 jobs will be lost after the owner of JD Sports decided to close its distribution centre in Derby.

The BBC understands staff based at Derby Commercial Park, off Raynesway, were told they were being let go on Friday following a six-week consultation period.

The sports clothing retailer signed a 20-year lease on the newly built 514,000 sq ft facility three years ago.

A spokesperson said the firm said: “We have made the difficult decision to close our Derby distribution centre and are working with all those affected to ensure they are fully supported through this challenging period.”

When it opened, the warehouse had 56 dock doors and eight-level access doors, as well as parking for 185 trailers.

It is understood the decision follows a strategic review of JD Group’s global supply chain network which explored all options available to the business.

A process is now in place to see if there are alternative roles within the business for affected staff, the BBC has been told.
