Hotel roof terrace plan near cathedral refused
A hotel has been refused permission to build a roof top terrace overlooking Lincoln Cathedral.
The White Hart had hoped the terrace would be its "crowning glory".
Historic groups had recommended that the plans be turned down to preserve the unique area, with City of Lincoln Council's planning committee narrowly sided with them.
One councillor claimed criticism of the plans was "snobbery".
Plans to build a swimming pool and expand the hotel were approved in July 2024.
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the latest proposal included a 'sky lounge' for special occasions on a private membership basis.
The application was rejected by seven votes to four.
Councillor Martin Christopher said he was worried about noise spilling into the square.
"There's a wonderful calming silence in Castle Square," he said.
Councillor Bob Bushell said the setting was "most sensitive", adding: "We must be incredibly careful."
However, councillor Neil Murray, who represents the ward, described criticism of the plans as "the very worst snobbery".
Councillor Chris Burke argued the plans were "reasonable, innovative and ambitious".
He added: "We should be exceeding places like York – this is a good example of what happens there."
