A man and woman have appeared in court in Liverpool accused of assaulting their three-month-old son.

Klevi Pirjani, 36, and Nivalda Santos Pirjani, 33, are both charged with causing grievous bodily harm to their son Miguel Pirjani, who died in the days after the alleged assault.

The two defendants, from Seacombe, Wirral, appeared via video link from separate prisons for a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court.

Honorary Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC said a trial would take place on either May 19 or September 22 next year with both defendants remanded in custody.

A plea and trial preparation hearing was listed for January 27.

An interpreter also appeared over the video link.

Police were called to reports of concern for a child at a property in Seacombe at about 12:00 GMT on Sunday 24 November, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said.

Miguel was taken to hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on Friday 29 November.
