New Civil War exhibition planned

A new exhibition featuring collections from the English Civil War is set to take place in Cheshire.

The Royal Rumble at Nantwich Museum will showcase the armour, coins and medals of King Charles I and Oliver Cromwell from 7 January until 8 February.

The exhibition is one of a series of annual events relating to the major Battle of Nantwich in 1644, which is commemorated in the town every January.

At the time, it was the only town in the county still held by the Parliamentarians, after the Royalists captured almost all of Cheshire.

The 17th Century conflict eventually resulted in Charles I going on trial before he was convicted of tyranny and treason and executed in 1649.

Four Battle of Nantwich talks with different themes will take place at the museum throughout January, as well as three Civil War Walking Tours.

This year's events will culminate with a Battle of Nantwich re-enactment on Mill Island on 25 January, a museum spokesperson added.
