Police publish scam prevention guide for Jersey

Police in Jersey have created a local version of a scam prevention booklet to help the public stay safe, the force said.

Jersey Police has published a Jersey version of the Little Book of Big Scams for Fraud Awareness Week, which explains common frauds and gives the public advice on how to avoid them.

The force said people do not need to be "computer experts" to avoid falling victim to scams.

"Developing a few good online and telephone habits drastically reduces your chances of becoming a victim of crime, makes you less vulnerable and lets you use the web safely," it said.

Police said many of the scams and frauds it investigates "could have been prevented by making a few small changes in behaviour".

The guide covers different types of scams including online cybercrime, telephone fraud and door-to-door scams, and gives people practical advice to reduce their risk.

The booklet, which is based on one published by the Metropolitan Police, also has contact information for Jersey organisations that provide training on staying safe and support for victims.
