A drinks can dating back more than 40 years has been found in sand dunes in Cornwall.

Volunteers from Newquay's Fistral Beach Clean Team said they found the original Jolly's sparkling orangeade can earlier this year.

Cheryl Ingram, managing director at Jolly's, said: "None of us realised Jolly's had previously produced a sparkling orange drink, as it had long been discontinued and forgotten. We now have the vintage can proudly on display."

Beach cleaner Andy Goodall said the can was "surprisingly well-preserved, with a distinctive retro design".

Jolly's said "the can dates back to the 1980s due to its distinctive design and branding, which were used during this era"

Mr Goodall said the clean-up team were "delighted when Jolly's wanted to reclaim this piece of their history".

The beach clean team was established in October 2010.

On the last Saturday of each month volunteers carry out a litter pick through the dunes, the surrounding footpaths and on the beach.

Jolly's said in a statement: "We know the can dates back to the 1980s due to its distinctive design and branding, which were used during this era.

"Roger Jolly, the great-great-great grandson of founder John Jolly, and a continuing consultant to the Jolly's production team, also confirmed and recalls the can from that period."
