Cliff lift shuts for three days ahead of revamp

A cliff lift to an Isle of Wight beach has closed for three days so work to replace its entrance canopy can start.
Shanklin Cliff Lift needs to shut be fitted with scaffolding, ahead of the work on its beach level entrance.
However, during the canopy revamp, expected to take five to six weeks, the lift will remain in use.
While the lift is out of action between 23 and 25 April access to the beach and town is via a steep pathway or bus service.

Isle of Wight Council said the works had been carefully timed to take place outside of Easter and the peak summer season.
The current lift, built in 1958, has two cars and takes about 30 seconds to travel 45m (148ft) vertically from the Esplanade to the cliff top.
