Queen Camilla will be paying a trip to the Isle of Man

Preparations have begun in the Isle of Man's capital to welcome Queen Camilla next week, to officially declare Douglas a city.

She is due to preside over a ceremony at Douglas City Hall on 20 March and meet local councillors, charities and community groups.

City council leader Claire Wells said the city hall would be "shut down" from Friday for security checks.

"Everybody wants to show off the best side of what we are," she said.

Mayor of Douglas Natalie Byron-Teare said it was set to be a "highlight of my life", to welcome Queen Camilla to they city.

She said: "It's not everyday you get to meet the Queen of England."

The capital was awarded city status as part of Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee honours in May 2022.

Trevor Latus, who manages a pub in the city, said: "I think it's great, I think it gives the whole island a lift."

He welcomed the royal visit, adding that they had a "Douglas City ale" on tap and the status gave "a great deal of esteem and prestige" to the island.

Sam Mahon from Onchan said she thought it was "great" that Queen Camilla would be visiting.

"Personally I think is fantastic," she added.

But not all views from the public were united.

Sean Maxwell from Peel said while he had "nothing against the royal family", money spent on a trip like this would be better directed at frontline services.

He said: "For me it's a waste of money and time."

Her Majesty will unveil a commemorative plaque at Douglas City Hall, before meeting well-wishers outside.

During her visit the Queen is also due to attend Government House to meet local charity representatives and community groups.
