Drop-in mobility advice service moves to appointments
Drop-in sessions for assessments and advice on solutions designed to help people keep their independence are set to be replaced with an appointment-based system.
The Independent Living Centre, which is based within the Central Community Health Centre in Douglas, allows people to try products including mobility aids.
From 7 August, people will only be able to access the services in 30-minute pre-booked sessions.
Manx Care said the system had been changed to “help the service to be more responsive and timely for those who need it”.
Self-referral
The appointments would also allow for “dedicated time and confidentiality to discuss any concerns”, the health care provider added.
The service has operated on a drop-in basis since it opened in 2011.
While it does not sell the equipment directly it allows patients to try them, and following an assessment may provide some items.
Those running the service also offer advice to individuals, families and carers and can signpost them to local suppliers.
Equipment available to try includes those offering bed, bathroom and general mobility assistance, as well as moving and handling equipment.
In future, pre-booked appointments will be made available between 09:00 and 14:30 on Wednesday following a referral.
That can be arranged by phone or via the self-referral system available online.
