A man has been arrested after a woman was ambushed in the street and subjected to a "horrific" sexual assault.

The attack happened in Hyde, Tameside, at about 06:40 BST on Friday, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

The force said the woman was approached from behind as she was walking past Grafton Street, just off Clark Way, and forced to a nearby patch of grass before being assaulted.

A 23-year-old man is being held on suspicion of serious sexual offences and remains in custody for questioning.

Det Ch Insp Anna Barker said: “Our enquiries are ongoing with patrols plans in place, as well as other officers working around the clock to bring the person responsible for this horrific act to justice."

The woman is being supported by specialist officers, she added.
