HSBC says 97% of payments are made using online or mobile banking

HSBC's St Sampson's branch will close permanently later this year, the bank has confirmed.

In an email sent to customers, HSBC said the site on The Bridge would close for the last time on 24 September.

Customers will be able to access services from the High Street branch in St Peter Port following the closure, and account details like their sort code will not change, the bank said.

The branch will remain open while the St Martin's branch is refurbished from February for five months.

Branch-only banking

In an impact statement posted on its website, HSBC says it "continually reviews" its network to ensure it has sites in the "right locations".

The bank broke down the figures it claimed it used to come to the decision, which show that less than 1% of people only use branches for their banking, with 97% of payments now made online.

It also revealed that four out of five people are registered for online banking, with 20% of what it calls "vulnerable customers" active users of digital banking.

HSBC said it would call every vulnerable customer to find "personalised" solutions for them following the closure.
