Calls for beach to apply for Blue Flag status

An MP has called for a local council to apply for Blue Flag status for one of its beaches to boost tourism.

Lewes' Liberal Democrat MP James MacCleary has made the proposal to Lewes District Council to enhance Seaford Beach.

The Blue Flag programme is run by the Foundation for Environmental Education and a string of environmental, educational, safety-related and access-related criteria must be met and maintained to qualify for the award.

MacCleary said: "It would not only ensure the beach meets rigorous environmental standards, but also enhance its appeal to both residents and visitors, benefiting the local economy."

Liza Andronova, who was on Seaford Beach, told BBC Radio Sussex that the award would be "absolutely amazing" for the town and was "definitely achievable".

"I think the people of Seaford and the people who come here all want to see it happen."

Claire Atherton, who recently moved to the area, also said the award would be a "massive boost" for Seaford.

Christine Brett, Liberal Democrat councillor for Seaford South, said: "We have an incredible opportunity to enhance and protect this wonderful beach, and achieving Blue Flag status would be a fantastic step toward ensuring its long-term preservation."

The council said it was determined to maintain the highest standards along its coast, including by holding water companies to account.

A spokesperson added: "The council will consider any suggestions that can play a positive role in preserving our natural environment."
