Human remains found in plane crashed off Shetland

Human remains have been discovered in the wreckage of a plane found in the North Sea, Police Scotland have confimed.

The force said the remains were found inside the small aircraft, which was recovered from the water north-east of Lerwick, Shetland.

The plane was discovered on Friday afternoon and brought ashore by a fishing boat on Sunday.

A Police Scotland spokesman said inquiries were ongoing.

He continued: "Police received a report of a small aircraft having been recovered from the water in the North Sea, north-east of Lerwick, around 14:20 on Friday 6 December.

"The aircraft was brought to shore on Sunday 8 December, and human remains were found within."

In October 2023, a light aircraft lost contact over the North Sea in the area between Shetland and Norway.

The plane had taken off from Germany with one person on board.
