Cliff railway to close for two days over half term

A cliff railway will be closed for two days over half term to allow new cables to be fitted.

The current steel wire ropes have "performed well", Bridgnorth Cliff Railway said, and have lasted longer than previous ropes.

But it decided to change them after learning about a better alternative at a presentation.

The railway will be closed on 29 and 30 October, but should be open on other days that week.

Engineers are due to change both the haulage and balance ropes on the track, which runs between High Town and Low Town.

The railway said the new ones have been wound in a different way and the presentation was given by HM Inspectorate of Mines, which regulates funicular railways.

It hosts meetings with cliff railway operators every six months and the Bridgnorth railway said it was impressed by recent trials.

The railway reopened in March after being closed for more than a year while repairs were carried out to a nearby wall.
