A man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and drink driving after a car crashed into the gates of the prime minister's country retreat.

A white Volkswagen Scirocco was reported to have hit the barriers at the entrance to Chequers in Buckinghamshire, shortly after midday on Tuesday.

Thames Valley Police said there was currently no evidence to suggest there was any intention to harm anyone.

"The driver, a 44-year-old man from Buckinghamshire, who was the only occupant, suffered serious injuries and has been taken to hospital, where he remains," the force said.

The Chequers estate, near the village of Ellesborough, has been the country home of the serving British prime minister since 1921.
