Police will run a half marathon to raise money for a woman's charity.

Cambridgeshire Police said more than 30 officers and staff would take part in the Great Eastern Run in Peterborough on October 13.

The force's team would run for Peterborough Women’s Aid and Sgt Ollie Plant, said the charity was "fantastic" and a "vital lifeline" for women.

He said they had been training hard for the past three months to prepare for the 13.1 mile (21 km) run and added: “Training has been going really well, aside from a few blisters and sore knees."

'Course is mercifully pretty flat'

He continued: “We’ve been focussed on slowly building up the distance and adding in a few inclines to really test ourselves.

“The Peterborough course is mercifully pretty flat, but that means it will be quick, so we need to make sure we’re well prepared and up to speed – quite literally!"

Sgt Plant added: "We’ve worked closely with the charity over the years to ensure victims of violence are supported and we want to raise as much money as possible for this worthy cause.”

The charity said earlier this year that its chief executive, Mandy Geraghty, would also run in the half marathon.

She said, in a post on the Peterborough Women's Aid website: "I spend a lot of my time asking people to fundraise for us.

"This time I am doing something myself!

"I want to raise awareness and funds for our lifesaving services”
