An investment of £3m has been made to improve road safety near schools across Surrey, a council has said.

Surrey County Council (SCC) says the improvements include a range of measures designed to create safer and more accessible routes for students, parents, and staff.

A total of 14 schools in seven boroughs have received additional safety measures on routes outside their premises.

Some roads have also had their speed limits lowered to 20mph, and four zebra crossings have been installed.

Footpaths have also been widened and some traffic lights have also been brought in.

Matt Furniss, cabinet member for highways, transport and economic growth, said: "Making routes to and from schools safer for children, parents and carers, is a key priority for both the council and local residents.

"I am delighted that with the support of the local schools and the wider community, we have been able to deliver more safety improvement schemes outside our schools, as part of our commitment to making journeys to school safer."

A further eight schools are also set to benefit with safety upgrades within the next year, SCC added.
