Mary Queen of Scots landmark to be lit up for show

The place where Mary Queen of Scots sought shelter before being executed is to become the stage for a festive light show.

Workington Hall, also known as Curwen Hall, in Workington, Cumbria, will provide a backdrop for the free family event.

Hosted by Cumberland Council, it will see the grounds illuminated with lights, projections and fire.

The Grade I listed hall, which was built around a pele tower dating back to the 14th Century, was the home of the Curwens, Lords of the Manor of Workington, and sits on the grounds of the Grade II listed Hall Park.

Mary Queen of Scots was given shelter there by the Curwen family in 1568, before she was captured and executed.

The hall, which is closed to the public, has undergone work to preserve it and in recent years has been used as a backdrop for events such as outdoor theatre performances.

Hall Park Light Works is due to take place on 30 November and 1 December from 17:30 GMT to 20:30.
