A man has been plucked from the water with the help of a rescue boat from a vehicle ferry.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said the man was spotted in the water off Town Quay in Southampton at about 05:25 BST.

He was recovered by a member of the public with the help of a rescue boat launched from a Red Funnel ferry. He was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Red Funnel's 06:00 vehicle ferry sailing from Southampton to the Isle of Wight and the 07:30 return from East Cowes were cancelled. Services have since returned to normal.

In a statement, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said officers had been called to Town Quay following reports of a concern for welfare after an unconscious man was pulled from the water.
