Warwickshire County Council says there have been numerous incidents on Clifton Road in Rugby involving unsafe and illegal parking

An urgent plea has been made to drivers to avoid unsafe and illegal parking, following dangerous incidents on a road in Warwickshire.

Warwickshire County Council said it was going to increase parking enforcement on Clifton Road, in Rugby, after a series of incidents.

On 23 February, a bus was unable to get on to a stand because of cars blocking its way. When the bus driver tried to pull away, a car pulling out of Moultrie Road attempted to overtake the bus and hit the front of it. Damage was caused but no-one was hurt.

There have also been several instances where cars parked in the bus stop have tried to pull out when the bus was forced to double park, putting passenger safety at risk.

The council said increased parking enforcement would make it more likely anyone parked illegally would be fined.

According to the authority, there have been 173 fines issued on Clifton Road since February 2024, with 94 of those being put on cars parked in the restricted bus stop area.

The council said drivers could park nearby on the following roads:

  • Moultrie Road – free parking less than one minute from the shops
  • Gas Street car park  – less than five minutes' walk from the shops
  • Railway Terrace car park – less than 10 minutes' walk from the shops
  • John Barford multi-storey car park – 10 minutes' walk from shops

Mark Ryder, executive director for communities at the council, said: "We are committed to supporting local businesses on the Clifton Road and will work with them to ensure that their customers are able to park safely near to their shops.

"But the current situation of cars parking temporarily in the bus stop cannot continue. The consistently inconsiderate and illegal parking along the Clifton Road of drivers using the shops has left us with little option.

"While enforcement is always a last resort, the actions of a small minority of drivers are putting other people's safety in jeopardy. That is unacceptable."
