Warning after 'oil spill' turns beach purple

A beach has turned purple following a suspected oil spill, a council has said.

Lancashire City Council has asked people to stay away from Half Moon Bay in Heysham following the "pollution incident".

The council said it was working with other authorities, including Lancaster police, to investigate the suspected spill.

It warned "residual contamination" could be present and asked people not to touch any visible oil or tar.

"Our advice is to avoid the beach area until further notice as residual contamination may still be present," Lancaster City Council said.
