Some HGVs restricted from road to reduce traffic

Some HGVs will be restricted from using narrow parts of the A595 to reduce traffic in a village.

Westmorland and Furness Council said HGVs weighing more than 7.5 tonnes would be stopped from passing through Grizebeck Village and School Road in Kirkby-in-Furness from 13 January for 18 months.

Vehicles could continue to access the area if providing a service to businesses and properties, the council added.

Councillor Peter Thornton said the restriction would help with managing "pinch points" on the A595 while delivering the new £23m single carriageway road between Chapels and Grizebeck Village.

Work to build a one-mile (1.4km) stretch of single carriageway began in September and is expected to take two years to complete.

The council said the temporary ban would "alleviate pressure and ease congestion on narrow sections of the A595 which the creation of a new single-carriageway road will address".

The authority added it was working with haulage firms to ensure they knew about the restriction and clear signage would be put up.

From January, on-site crews will also ensure HGVs do not pass through the section.

Thornton said: "We understand the importance of planning and communication in implementing this change, especially for our haulage companies who are crucial to our local economy.

"We'll be working closely with them in the run up to the temporary restrictions and offering support to minimise disruptions and impact on their journeys."
