Two men arrested after fatal M40 crash

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and burglary after a crash that closed part of the M40 for nearly 20 hours.

A grey BMW 340i, which police believe was stolen in Oxfordshire, was being driven on the southbound carriageway between junctions 9 for Bicester and 8A for Wheatley at about 22:40 GMT on Monday.

Police said the car crashed into the northbound carriageway and a man, 20, from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, and another man, 34, from Evesham, Worcestershire, both died.

They were in the same car as a man, 19, from Evesham, and a fourth man, 22, from Southam, Warwickshire, who were arrested and remain in custody. They sustained serious injuries.

The stretch of motorway, which passes through Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, was closed for most of Tuesday and reopened at about 18:10, National Highways said.

Richard Thorpe, of Thames Valley Police's Roads Policing Unit, asked anyone who might have seen the crash or the BMW before it happened to contact officers.
