Pedestrian, 95, killed in crash was 'true gentleman'

A 95-year-old pedestrian who died after being hit by a car whilst crossing a road was "loved and respected by many", his family has said.

John Burdon had been crossing Oxford Street in Woodstock at about 17:50 BST on Monday when he was involved in a collision with a blue Jaguar S-Type.

Thames Valley Police said Mr Burdon had been taken to hospital in a serious condition following the incident, and died on Tuesday evening.

Paying tribute following his death, Mr Burdon's family said he had been "known for his kindness, generosity and as a true gentleman".

Mr Burdon had lived in Woodstock for the past 14 years and was "loved and respected by many residents" having been a "regular sight in the town and walking in the Blenheim estate", his family said.

"We would like to thank the Woodstock community for their support and kind words following the sad and tragic death on Tuesday of our father, grandfather and great grandfather," the tribute said.

It added that Mr Burdon had "loved to sing" and had been a member of the Woodstock choral society, as well as "regular member" of the congregation in church on Sundays.

Police said it had made no arrests in connection with the incident, and urged potential witnesses to share any information they may have.

It added that the Jaguar had been travelling north on the A44 through Woodstock town centre towards Enstone when the incident took place.
