Suspicious object found in west Belfast 'a hoax'

A suspicious object found outside a property in west Belfast which sparked a security alert has been declared a hoax by police.

The operation at Springfield Road began on Sunday morning, with a number of surrounding roads closed.

Ammunition Technical Officers attended the scene and a controlled explosion was carried out.

About 20 people, including young children, had to leave their homes during the operation but have since been allowed to return.

Cordons have also been lifted.

Damien Henry, who lives nearby, told BBC News NI he had found the object on Sunday morning while he was putting items in his van.

He said he made the initial call to police.

It was taken away for further examination.

A police spokesperson said: "We understand the disruption this incident caused, to road users and the public, and I want to thank everyone impacted for their patience and co-operation while the scene was made safe."
