Drivers in Surrey have been facing disruption after roadworks on the A3 overran.

The Hindhead tunnel was closed overnight in both directions for routine works and did not reopen as planned earlier, which caused delays.

Diversion routes are in place along the A325 and A31 between Longmoor, heading northbound, and Guildford heading southbound.

National Highways said the closure was due to a "CCTV fault" and has now reopened one lane in each direction.

Traffic is currently "coping well", according to traffic data.

A National Highways spokesperson said a 40mph (64km/h) speed limit would also be enforced, adding: "Anyone planning to use the A3 in this part of the network serving Hampshire and Surrey is advised to delay their journey or use an alternative route should they wish to avoid likely congestion along the diversion routes."

The A3 around Godalming north of the tunnel and Liphook south of the tunnel remains open to local traffic.

Further overnight closures are planned from 21:00 to 06:00 GMT from Wednesday to Saturday, and then again overnight from 31 March to 5 April.
